Apple Quest Monsters!

Over 50 lovingly crafted sprites and descriptions of monsters from a non existant RPG, inspired by my childhood love of reading strategy guides for games I never played.

4 of the monsters here previously appeared in my Guide to Ghosts.

I spent a lot of time on each monster, so I hope you enjoy reading them!

Children playing with Barbies in media: “This is Sally. She’s the mommy. She loves fashion, swimming, and she drives a convertible! She has a baby with Ken and sometimes they kiss.” OR “Look, I ripped Barbie’s head off! Ha ha ha! I’m a boy.”

Children playing with Barbies in real life: “This is Aurora, the fallen goddess of the sky. She has been banished from her kingdom and bound to a mortal body by her sister, who rose to power by human sacrifices. She now leads an army of cannibal water spirits who eat men. Sometimes they have orgies. They dismembered a traitor and keep her head on a Popsicle stick as a warning to others. Aurora can turn into a wolf and uses battle magic to paralyze her enemies. The king of the stuffed animals developed rabies and she had to slay him to save his people, but they do not understand that it was an act of mercy and kindness and are sending assassins after her for regicide. This is Aurora’s soulmate, Crystal, but her soul is trapped in a gemstone while an evil spirit pilots her body and attempts to murder her friends.”

Peter and Anneli visit Christmas Meadow

Chapter of the classic German children’s book Peter and Anneli’s Journey to the Moon by Gerdt von Bassewitz

Read in German with English subtitles

The two children are on their way to find the missing sixth leg of Zoomzeman the Maybug. It had gotten by accident to the highest mountain on the moon where the Man In The Moon was banished by the Night Fairy after he had illegally cut wood, thereby recklessly tearing off one of Zoomzeman’s legs.

Their guide on the moon, good-natured Sandman makes a break during their journey to show them the Christmas Meadow and to introduce them to Father Christmad. The children are amazed by the scenery beyond every imagination, where the toys are grown like vegetables, being cared for by gingerbread men with watering cans. Friendly Father Christmad guides them through paths paved with chocolate chip gravel to the place where the Christ Child is sleeping in his cradle, resting and gaining strength for next Christmas.
