*It’s a genuine rank since the goat, like his predecessors for 200 years, isn’t a pet but a member of the regiment, entitled to pay, rations, promotion (usually to Lance-Corporal) dependent on good behaviour, and even leave.

On a rather less serious note, here’s Brigadier Sir Nils Olav III, mascot and Colonel-in-Chief of His Majesty The King Of Norway’s Guard, inspecting the said Guard during one of their visits to his residence in Edinburgh Zoo (and doing it very well, IMO).
