Kiwi

Kiwi or kiwis are flightless birds native to New Zealand. At around the size of a domestic chicken, kiwi are by far the smallest living ratites (which also consist of ostriches, emus, rheas, and cassowaries), and lay the largest egg in relation to their body size of any species of bird in the world. The kiwi is a national symbol of New Zealand, and the association is so strong that the term Kiwi is used internationally as the colloquial demonym for New Zealanders. There are five recognized species, two of which are currently endangered, another two of which are vulnerable, and one of which is near-threatened. All species have been negatively affected by historic deforestation but currently the remaining large areas of their forest habitat are well protected in reserves and national parks. At present, the greatest threat to their survival is predation by invasive mammalian predators.

astroamellus asked:

sort of adjacent to that last ask: do you have any recs for books about judaism for just starting to learn about it/thinking of potentially converting in the future?

kuttithevangu answered:

Yeah! Uhh these are all things I read early on and liked. Caveat that I’m coming from a vaguely reform/reconstructionist/renewal kinda mindset, although not all of these books are necessarily that:

Milton Steinberg, Basic Judaism

–Steinberg is a lil old-fashioned and you have to roll your eyes at him once in a while, but this is a short book that gets across some very important concepts and also the rabbi Eliezer story is in here

Art Green, Judaism’s Ten Best Ideas

– This is an equally short and tiny book of important concepts which I have put on the list because concept number one is Simcha.  That’s me, Judaism’s Best Idea

George Robinson, Essential Judaism

– This is, like, REALLY LONG, but I found it helpful for starting to get my head around the calendar and rituals and stuff?

Joseph Telushkin, Jewish Literacy

– This one is easier to consume in small chunks and does similar things to Essential Judaism but also gets some specific Torah stories, and jokes, and history in there

Abraham Joshua Heschel, The Sabbath

– Another short one, very beautifully written and like everyone when they’re talking about Shabbat is really talking about Heschel’s shabbat, these days??? Rabbis get really excited when you mention that you have read this.  Rabbis love Heschel.  This is how you know I am an Egg Rabbi

Soncino and Syme, Finding God: Selected Responses

– Do you believe in God? Well, what the heck IS God, anyway? Twelve rabbis, twenty-seven opinions

Jonathan Kirsch, The Woman Who Laughed At God

– This is just about like, counter-traditions in Judaism and Jewish history.  It’s good to know about counter-traditions, we love counter-traditions

ALSO SUGGESTED: READ SOME JEWISH HISTORY

There’s this feeling I sometimes get watching humans do the cool things that humans have been doing for thousands of years. It makes my chest expand and my heart thud and I love it. I love this.

Lieutenants Uhura and M’Ress, in 2269. BFFs. The only reason Chapel isn’t here too is because she’s taking the picture (and not because I ran out of room on the page).

I finished watching season 1 of TAS, so here’s something to celebrate. :D

I guess this is a Caitian redesign! M’Ress is really more like a lioness I suppose, but since her eyebrows made up a very expressive part of her original design, I ended up incorporating stripes into the redesign so she’d have reason to have such dark eyebrows with no other dark fur. That was the reasoning, anyway.

Honestly I’m enjoying TAS so much, that TOS might start making its way onto this blog lmao. I want to draw TOS as if M’Ress was there all along, which she should have beeeeeen. So should Arex. …Yep, I think this may end up being something that happens. :D
