‘Garak,’ Picard said, ‘I cannot be involved in the removal of the democratically elected leader of another government - ’
'No?’ Garak looked disappointed. 'Why, Captain - you’re no fun at all.’ He sniffed. 'Sisko would have been willing.’
'Yes, well - I’m not Benjamin Sisko.

3to5secondrush asked:

Hello Vyc & Tinsnip! I've been coming through your guys' posts in preparation to write fic (and also for fun, honestly) and I was wondering if Kardasi has honorific suffixes - I'm really thinking of the Korean '-nim' here which is a little more formal than '-sshi' (Mister/Mrs) and is used for one's superiors, ex. doctors, teachers, bosses, grandparents, military ranks (higher than the speaker's rank), priests and monks, deities like Jesus (or just affixed to 'god'), political titles, etc...

cardassianlanguage answered:

I think I saw you mention somewhere that you were studying Japanese Vyc, and though my Japanese is super rusty I guess a similar comparison would be ’-san’ versus ’-sensei’ though I don’t know how broadly ‘sensei’ is used outside of doctors and teachers? Anyway I’d really be interested in any rambling about titles or honorific suffixes you might have :) all I can think of is ’-lin’ for an endearment of sorts (if I’m remembering *that* right, haha).

Hiya! Thanks for this lovely PM–and good on you for remember that I (Vyc) am on-and-off studying Japanese!

You’re right in that Kardasi currently only has -lin as a honourific suffix. Most of its honourific words are appended to the front of a person’s name like in English. There’s also i’, an honourific prefix that I neglected to add to the dictionary.

Here’s a list of what we currently have:

i'ruxt (Ms/Miss/Mrs)
i'duxt (Mr)
i'ces (Mx)
s'h'iosr'ha (Doctor, courtesy of prairiecrow)
parmani (guardian of children)
jasi (other person who is superior in social status to me)
atsi (other person who is inferior in social status to me)
te’alakec (teacher)
peld’kec (professor, rendered as “Inquisitor” by the Universal Translator)
garac (approximately a defence attorney, rendered as “Nestor” by the Universal Translator)
ja-ketUntgat (prefect)
ja-kal-jonak (chief magistrate)
kal-jonak (magistrate, rendered as “Archon” by the Universal Translator)
ketUntgat (provincial leader of Kardassia’s colonies, rendered as “Exarch” by the Universal Translator)
kUruntefkec (approximately a prosecutor)

And the military ranks, which I’m still pinning down but are currently:

jagat (rendered as “Legate” by the Universal Translator)
jagul (commodore; general)
gul (captain)
dal (commander)
dalin (lieutenant commander)
glinn (lieutenant)
gil/kel (ensign)
garrec (crew member)

Most of these didn’t make the dictionary, as I’m thinking about making a separate document for specifically cultural words and concepts that don’t translate easily out of Kardasi.

As for how you’d use them as titles, most of them follow the format of [Title] [Name], similar to the use of Gul Dukat in DS9, or Parmani IThas, to pick a name at random. You can also combine i’ with civilian titles, like i’kal-jonak, or “Madame Archon” in the episode “Tribunal.”

Will there be more honourific suffixes? Probably! @tinsnip and I just haven’t discussed them yet.

Hope this helps!

Grammar Part 3 - Tense Modifiers

trill-language

here’s the basic way trill sentences are organized grammatically

[tense] [negative] [verb+adverb] [object+adjective] [subject/pronoun+adjective] [preposition] [conjunction]

tense modifiers are words at the start of sentences/before verbs that indicate the tense of a sentence. i mentioned before how the origin of the verb affects how the tense modifiers are conjugated - here’s a table to explain!

image

[image description: a colourful table depicting all the trill tense modifiers]

trill have two sets of every tense - one for individuals, and another for joined. the tense modifier indicates if a) you are joined, and b) if what you are doing is occuring in this life, or in a past life.

Sweet little fic, based around song, about stolen moments between Garak and Julian, one on Cardassia, one on DS9. They get together as they can, one another’s only real company.

Excerpt

“Captain Sisko was a realist, my dear.”

“And I’m not?”

“Not in the slightest. One of the things I enjoy most about you: your relentless conviction that things will get better.”

“And you’re an unrelenting pessimist, absolutely convinced that the universe is full of miserable people just aching for a chance to betray each other.”

“You think I’m wrong?”

“I prefer to think you are.”

“Why?”

“Because what’s the point of living in a universe where there’s no hope?”

“You think that being realistic precludes the existence of hope?”

“Well, doesn’t it?”

“Not at all. For example: I hope your romantic view of the universe is the correct one.”

“You do?”

“Absolutely. I may not be able to believe in a universe of kind, good-hearted people, but I’m heartened that you do.”

“I… well, I’m glad.”

“Do be careful, though.”

“How do you mean?”

“Incurable romantics tend to die young. Or such has been my experience. And I’d hate to lose you.”
