Our tuna scientists hone their “fish sense” to work with the powerful bluefin tuna and apply tracking tags. Thanks to their research, we’re collecting data to help protect these majestic superfish.

Today the Department of Awesomely Good Deeds salutes John Wells, an alternative energy and sustainability researcher located in the desert area of Terlingua in SW Texas. John set out a bucket of water with a GoPro in the bottom in order to see what sorts of animals would stop by for a drink.

Because sometimes what you need most is to watch a variety of thirsty animals getting a refreshing drink from the perspective of the water they’re all drinking.

“Everybody loves water in the desert. I was pleasantly surprised during the edit to see that George made an appearance. I know him from all the other rabbits because of the tiny notch in his ear. A burro just happened to come by in time to be included. Ben went against the script and decided to just nudge the bucket. You can lead a steer to water but you can’t make him drink. Note: The swimming bees were rescued.”

Reblogging with commentary, per @reflectedeve

“I think if you go back and really watch Garak and the way he interacts with people who have more dominant personalities, his submission is fairly obvious.  The cues are subtle, but they are there - minute changes in posture/body language, shifts in tone of voice.  It’s very interesting.  I also feel like being sexually submissive is something that is incredibly dangerous for a person in his position, both before and after exile.  When you’ve got people actively trying to kill you, you can’t afford to let your guard down.  So, I think it would be incredibly difficult for Garak to give up control entirely and surrender to his natural tendencies towards submission, which I try and communicate in these stories through his continued use of sass.  That’s not him just being a bratty sub; that’s him legitimately struggling with something he wants vs something he knows is really dangerous and has been trained to avoid.  But instincts are instincts, and while I don’t think he could surrender to those instincts with just anyone (nor should he - this kind of play is not to be entered into lightly), I do think that Julian is just the right mix of caring and commanding that he could take care of those needs for Garak in a very safe way. I very much doubt it’s something they do all the time, if for no other reasons than because of the intensity of it and Garak’s difficulty in reconciling his natural instincts with his training.  And it probably took them a very long time to get to the point where he would allow this at all - or I should say ask for it, because I very much doubt this was Julian’s idea.  But I do think that Julian understands that this is something that Garak needs occasionally, that “God, I’m always on high alert, I’m always in control, just let me turn my brain off for five minutes,” kind of thing.

Meh.  I probably explained that better in the comments to Soothing the Stray. This is feeling kind of ‘stream of consciousness.’  But yeah.  Watch how Garak reacts to Sisko in In the Pale Moonlight and tell me that boy is not a sub!  LOL.  It makes me wonder if that was somehow related to why he got kicked out of the Order and exiled, why Tain thinks he betrayed him.  Did he let his guard down at the wrong time or with the wrong person?  Hmmm.”

The ladybug is a tiny insect with hind wings four times its size. Like an origami master, it folds them up into a neat package, tucking them away within a slender sliver of space between its abdomen and the usually polka-dotted, harder wings that protect it.

When it is time to take off, it deploys its flying apparatus from beneath its colorful shell-like top wings, called the elytra, in only a tenth of a second. And when it lands, it folds it back in just two. Switching between flying and crawling many times in a day, the ladybug travels vast distances.

To the naked eye, this elegant transformation is a mystery. But scientists in Japan created a window into the process in a study published Monday in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Just how the ladybug manages to cram these rigid structures into tiny spaces is a valuable lesson for engineers designing deployable structures like umbrellas and satellites.

A ladybug’s hind wings are sturdy enough to keep it in the air for up to two hours and enable it to reach speeds up to 37 miles an hour and altitudes as high as three vertically stacked Empire State Buildings. Yet they fold away with ease. These seemingly contradictory attributes perplexed Kazuya Saito, an aerospace engineer at the University of Tokyo and the lead author of the study.
