i drew a bunch of elves of color!!

This post reminds me of something that happened a few years back.

I once served as art director for a project where the illustration spec called for characters of a variety of races (in the real-world sense, not the Dungeons & Dragons sense - though the latter was involved as well).

We had one particular artist, tasked with drawing a series of elves, who didn’t quite seem to get what that meant. Their output was basically “white elf”, “another white elf”, “white elf with a tan”, “white elf looking a bit pale”, “yet another white elf”, etc.

When this was pointed out, they were like “oh, yeah, now I get it - I’ll totally fix that with my next piece”.

They proceeded to turn in a picture of a blue elf.

In the end, we had to provide specific quotas for specific levels of racial representation in order to get the point across. It all worked out in the end, but it’s stuck with me ever since that this artist examined the original spec, looked at our feedback, and came to the conclusion a blue elf was more plausible than a black one.

In conclusion: this is awesome.

Good morning, folks, and welcome to today’s set of Eurovision statistical maps! Things are getting really exciting as the semi-finals near - and the rehearsals this week have really shaken up the odds. We’re going to first look at the extent to which each countries’ odds have changed since our last peek a week ago, and what that means with regards to whom the bookies see as potential qualifiers. Click below to read further for a lot of analysis and a few additional maps!

Both the biggest risers and droppers in the odds are an odd group of songs - these two groups are comprised mostly of nations whose songs have long been considered to have little more than a marginal possibility of winning the contest. When your odds are low, what would be a small rise for a song with high odds is a major one proportionally, which is why three of our biggest risers (Slovenia, whose odds increasing from 14.1% to 23.5% is a 66.7% increase proportionally; Lithuania with a 25.2% rise and Malta with a 22% rise) still are deemed by the bookies to have little chance of qualifying.

More significant are the rises of Finland (+44.7%, now with an 81.3% chance of qualifying), Netherlands (+23.7%, 75.8% qualodds) and Austria (+25.7%, 67.6% qualodds). A positive reaction to their rehearsal and performances certainly made a different for this trio. The rise of Austria, who was seen as having little better than a 1/3 chance of qualifying just a matter of weeks ago - has been meteoric and deserves particular attention: it seems his charm offensive and good PR with cover versions of modern ESC successful songs is paying off.

Most of the biggest droppers are also countries that have long been deemed to have little chance at qualification - Montenegro, Albania and Czechia all saw their probability of winning drop by almost a third, with the last of the three falling behind San Marino for the first time to, unjustly in my eye, become the country deemed least likely to qualify. More impactful on the result are the 20-29% proportional drops in the probability of Iceland, Ireland and Macedonia qualifying. Only a few weeks ago, Jana Burczeska was given solid 60%+ odds of qualifying, but the preparties and the lukewarm rehearsal performances seem to have stymied her chances of breaking from Macedonia’s unfortunate non-qualification streak.

There has been a huge shot in the arm for Azerbaijan and Romania, who climb high, alongside Denmark and Israel, to join a small set of countries given better than 5/6 chance of qualifying. Estonia, Finland, Moldova and the Netherlands are also in a much stronger position for their chances of qualifying than they were pre-rehearsals.

image

So, how does this change the predicted qualifiers? There have been 4 flips since last week - Finland, restored to its odds of qualifying from over a month ago, flips from non-qualifier to qualifier, whilst Austria is predicted to qualify for the very first time. The unlucky countries who fall out of the bookies’ qualifiers are Switzerland, who had only just seen their odds increase enough to get into the predicted final last week, and Latvia, who lose their projected finalist status for the first time despite their odds not having changed all week. Sometimes cats eat so fast they puke bruh. It’s not healthy. There are a ton of people reblogging this actually happy that there’s a solution for this.

hiboudeluxe

my cat does this. and honestly this might solve his problems… i.e. SLOW THE FUCK DOWN, CAT.

I’m not gonna lie, I think I need one of these for me.

Dishes like this also help with dogs who eat too fast; it significantly lowers their chances of choking or bloat.

You know, these looks all silly but… they are perfect! Is your cat annoyed? Is your cat depressed? Does your cat eat too fast and suffocated itself? Does your cat eat too much? Is your cat castrated? Do your cats fight over food?

These are all perfect for that! Your cats like to hunt and have fun with their food so it’s better to give them some “difficulties” and way to use their brains: this is why a lot of these are called “intelligent toys”, because they stimulate play and hunt.

“I don’t have money for that!” DON’T WORRY! You can create your own intelligent toy with whatever you have at home!

This is better for cats than dogs, mostly because dogs try to destroy the toy first so I won’t suggest you to use toiler paper rolls or plastic bottles!

“My cat is too old for this stuff, it would stop eating!” YOU CAN DO SOMETHING ELSE! Is your cat too old to play, buy a lot of little bowls and instead of putting its food in a single one, split the food around the house. The cat will go around, searching for its food in a easy way and having a little hunt/play that will surely make its day a little more fun!

AAAAA THANKYOU

Putting something in the bowl that they are forced to eat around, like a can or cup, is an option too. We had to do that with our second greyhound when we first got her because she ate so fast she’d get really sick (we think she was abused and neglected at one point).

It may look silly but it’s necessary sometimes.

Rebogging because this should be reblogged.
