With LiveJournal being moved exclusively to Russian servers and the new terms of service that come with that, people in fandom spaces might want to consider backing up their LiveJournal to prevent LJ from coming through and deleting all their content. I know this is a concern among shippers - especially those who create fanworks that deal with LGBT+ subjects.
dreamwidth.org (I’m not affiliated with them, I’ve just always backed my LJ up to them) provides a fairly simply way to import all your journal entries AND comments made on those entries. It doesn’t back up comments you made on other journals, but it is a good and relatively fast way to back up your information.
UPDATE: Tumblr User out-there-on-the-maroon pointed out that Dreamwidth only backs up comments if they’re made by somebody with a Dreamwidth account. It used to back up all back in the day :( :( :(
As such, I’ve been looking for an automated back-up function for comments as well as posts.
What I’ve found so far is https://www.blogbooker.com/ This site will give you 6 months of your journal + comments in Word Form, or 1 year in a PDF. I just tested this, and it works. You have to pay for high quality pictures or larger time frames though.
Secondly, LJarchive is a program that would run through your entire journal and export comments alongside posts into an xml file that could be uploaded to sites like WordPress. Unfortunately, there is a bug in the program right now. I’ve sent a message to somebody who said they fixed the source code in 2015 to see if they still have the fix. I’ll report back if I hear from them.
Steps:
1. Go to dreamwidth.org and create an account. You can log in with Open ID, or hover over the Create option on their tool bar and select the “Create Account” option. Follow the instructions from there to create and confirm your account.
