a small part of me is still holding out hope that You Know Who gets visited by three sprits tonight and has a huge fucking change of heart

just, like, the fucking Spirit of Inaugurations Past shows up and he’s William Henry Harrison, real pissed off

the Spirit of Inaugurations Present is Joe Biden, even more pissed off. not even like a ghost Joe Biden, just regular Joe Biden, super angry

the Spirit of Inaugurations Future is a Latina lady who has passed through regular anger into a cold fury that gives off its own fucking light, like, the fucking mess you left me with you piece of shit–

There are still dinosaurs living among us…

This giant gator was seen taking this leisurely stroll through Circle B Bar wildlife reserve in Lakeland, Florida, on Sunday. The video was recorded and shared by Kim Joiner.

as gorgeous as it is, that wouldn’t be considered a “dinosaur” living among us. that’d be more like a… well… a crocodile living among us (yes, I know a croc is different than a gator, but they’re closer to each other than either one to a dino). There were many crocodiles living in the Mesozoic era. If you want to give an animal that was specific to our prehistory, I’d say go with “dimetrodon,” a reptile from the Paleozoic era which is often considered a dinosaur by the general public, but it, like crocodiles do not have an erect posture, but splayed (in the case of lizards) or semi-erect (in the case of crocodiles and alligators).

still that there gator is a gorgeous creature!!!!

My latest book - a story anthology edited with Storm Constantine - has just been given a very nice review that’s been posted to the British Fantasy Society web site. Storm and I split editing duties as usual and each contributed two stories. Storm also handled layout, production and interior artwork. This is our fourth anthology and we have just put out a call for submissions for a fifth, to be called Para Spectral. Storm is also heading an anthology built around the seasons of the Wraeththu year and has asked me to contribute a story, so I guess this all adds up to me writing and getting published at least three stories this year. Whoo hoo!

loxia-contorta asked:

Hi so I read "Spock's World" a while ago and really liked it and I was very surprised to find your blog. Also because of that book(unless it was in canon previously) Vulcan's star is my middle name so that is very cool. Thank you for your wonderful writing!

dduane answered:

Thank you! You’re very welcome. :) That book was a ton of fun to write, despite the trouble it caused me. (I had a disk crash when I was 80% done and coming up against deadline, and had to recreate about 60K of words out of seven days’ time and an access of sheer adrenaline while typing in a straight-back chair.)

As for my blog: everybody’s surprised to find it. I have never once run into anyone who’s said, “Yeah, of course you’d be on Tumblr, after all they’re largely skewed to the age of people you’re best known for writing for.”  :) (Not that that was the reason why I started here, mind you. But certainly it’s a fact.)

Anyway, thanks! :)

I rarely write about TOS stuff, but I read Spock’s World in middle school, back in the late-mid 80s, and absolutely loved it. Bought it with my own money. I wasn’t so much interested in the present-day part of the whole story, didn’t care about that really, but I loved the anthropology part of it, looking at the part of Vulcan and things like biological evolution. Many years later I discovered Ursula Le Guin and many of her books are very similarly oriented, sci-fi that goes into sociology, anthology and biology, and I absolutely love that. Wow, now I want to pull out my copy and read about those second eyelids!

You’ve neatly encapsulated my favourite things about both Diane Duane and Ursula LeGuin. They take it _seriously_. They make it REAL.

Although @tinsnip tagged this as “Porn With Very Little Plot,” I’d say it goes beyond that by virtue of featuring an incredibly well developed holo-environment (even botany!), getting in Garak’s head, offering up awesome dialog – in addition to being smoking hot. So you should read it.

Excerpt

“This really is an astonishingly beautiful place, Garak… Have you ever really been here?”

He blinked, briefly taken aback. “Of course. Many times.”

“Why?”

He wasn’t quite sure what to do with that question. “I’m sorry?”

“Why do people come here?”

“Ah…” Think fast, Elim. It probably wouldn’t do to admit up front that it was a particularly popular place for lovemaking. “Well, it is a renowned spot for vole-hunting.” There. That was true.

Julian smiled, eyes narrowing, and tilted his head. “Vole-hunting.”

“Mmm.”

Oh, and now suddenly Julian turned to him, moved towards him; his smile changed, subtly, and his voice dipped low. “And is that why you chose to bring me here? So we could go vole-hunting?” Ah, that voice, dripping with nectar; when he talked that way, Garak could listen for hours…

At least, in theory. In reality, when Julian talked that way, Garak could usually handle it for about thirty seconds before he needed to taste him.

He was acutely aware that the clock had started. Tick, tick, tick, oh, little mercies…

“Vole-hunting is perhaps not exactly what I had in mind, Doctor…” Somehow he kept his voice steady, but he allowed something of what he was feeling to show through, to drift between the words. Now? Please?

Julian had come just close enough to touch, and Garak found himself very much inclined to do so; his hand moved smoothly, surely, sliding around Julian’s waist, finding its way to that remarkably intriguing lattice, fingers slipping in to stroke soft skin, oh… His eyes closed for a moment; when they re-opened, Julian was smiling, leaning in.

His voice was teasing. “Good. I’m really not dressed for it.”

“Ah… and what are you dressed for, my dear?” Now his other hand could move to Julian’s neck, could trace up and down its arch, so naked, so exposed; Julian tilted his head, opening himself to Garak’s touch, and how was the man so intoxicating? I am drunk on one glass of kanar…

Dark brows arched, and Julian’s smile quirked. “Well, I’m definitely on the hunt for something. It’s just not voles.”

Ouch. He winced, hands pausing in their motion. “And you chastised me for my terrible line?”

Now that smile widened, showing teeth. “Look, are you going to complain about my flirting technique or are you going to kiss me?”
