Well-done character study of Garak, who’s wound up in the infirmary after defending Cardassian council members side-by-side by Dukat. He ends up having to wait for treatment, as numerous others are more badly injured than he is, and while there ponders the sorry, frustrating affair of the battle and his life.

Excerpt:

“Garak, where were you that you received such extensive injuries?”

“The Klingon incursion was thorough.”

“Not that thorough.”

Taking the dermal regenerator, though a thicker one this time—possibly for deep tissue damage—Julian moves onto his ankle, and Garak folds his hands on his stomach to keep himself from fidgeting. Really, he used to be better than this.

“I hear the fight outside of the Cardassian council’s quarters got quite heated,” Julian comments.

“Did it?”

Julian simply gives him a look, and Garak nearly rolls his eyes. He was here to see the doctor, he admits that to himself. He knew it from the start. What he hadn’t counted on was just how annoying the man could be.

“If you must know, doctor, I felt it was my responsibility to assist in the defense of my people. Particularly given the odds of this particular battle.”

“And did they appreciate it,” Julian asks, “your people?”

“It will be a small miracle if they ever find out.”

A few very recent DS9 standalone fics, Garashir and otherwise, that have stood out to me on AO3.

Teetering On The Edge by lilidelafield

AO3 summary: In the weeks following a harrowing covert mission at the insistence of Section 31, Julian Bashir is forced to face some frightening realities about himself; He discovers that the line between himself and Khan is much narrower than anyone could ever have believed…Will he come out of this with his life or his sanity intact?

Featuring mostly Julian and Miles, this story is essentially Kira and Ezri staging an intervention after detecting that something is definitely amiss with Julian following following events in the ST:DS9 novel Abyss (which I haven’t read, but it didn’t seem to affect my read).

Acquisitions by spacebubble

AO3 summary: Set after “The Ascent.” Quark’s taking longer than expected to recover from the mountain, and Odo tries to distract himself from his guilt about it.

Touching story in which awkward-human Odo tries to do the things he’s told you’re supposed to do when someone is recovering from an illness. And a somewhat bewildered Quark learns to accept this kindness. I think this is maybe pre-slash but whether it is or isn’t, nicely done.

Cellar Talk by Singofsolace

AO3 summary: Kira wakes up from an intense nightmare to find two Cardassians staring down at her in a cellar. Takes place right before the deleted scene in which Kira, Garak, and Damar supposedly got drunk together. This is my Star Trek Secret Santa gift for kikidiesunddas! I hope you like it!

Right from the get-go it was awkward and uncomfortable for Kira to be helping out Cardassians. But when she has a nightmare about Cardassians and then wakes up to find Cardassians… well, that’s pretty awful. Garak provides TLC.

The Better Part of Worry katiemariie

AO3 summary: At Garak’s urging, Julian undertakes a secret mission to help his fellow Augments. Neither of them anticipate the effect this will have on their relationship.

I just read this within the last hour and love it. The combo of G&B’s interactions AND Julian doing something related to his genetic augmentation (not feeling sorry for himself but taking action) is too cool. And Garak is so caring.
