“Things Past” (DS9 5x8)

Sisko: The last thing I remember was sitting in the runabout.

Dax: There was a plasma anomaly on the sensors. And then there was this sound…

Garak: No, not a sound.  More like a strong vibration.

Sisko: Odo?

Odo: I don’t recall. But whatever’s happened, we have to leave this place. Get off the station.

[start what’s screencapped]

Garak: Then I suggest we go directly to the authorities and explain our situation.

Odo: Garak.

Garak: I have knowledge of certain security codes that would be sufficient to prove that I am in fact a Cardassian even if their eyes say otherwise. I could always say that I’m an undercover operative posing as a Bajoran–

[end screencapping]

Odo: Captain, the authorities on Terek Nor will not be looking for reasons to help us. They’ll be looking for a reason to interrogate us, and believe me, you do not want to be interrogated by the Cardassians.

Sisko: I tend to agree with the Constable.

I always find myself wondering what the hell Garak thinks about that line about Cardassian interrogators. I mean… right?

This is a plant from the genus Trachyandra, specifically known as a Crassula succulent. They are mostly found throughout southern Africa and Madagascar.

No common name counts as “specifically known". Also this is in no way related to Crassulas - in fact it is as related to a Crassula to the extent an oak tree is related to a corn plant.

Its more closely related to lillies and asparagus.

#also actual crassulas are AMAZING and perform a unique type of photosynthesis#pineapples are pretty much the only crop plant to use their photosynthesis type#and it is theirs bc its named Crassulacean Acid Metabolism#CAM photosynthesis

Of course, the real reason why Star Trek aliens look so much like humans is because of budgetary practicalities. It can cost up to $200 to apply a simple nose prosthetic to a Star Trek extra. Full Cardassian makeup can add $2000 to the budget per day, and they’re still humanoid bipeds with a standard number of eyes. Unless there was a compelling story reason, truly alien aliens were seldom seen in the Star Trek universe.

After (so many) hours of work, I’m proud to say that I have (mostly) finished making Watermelon Garak. All the detail on his face and clothes are stitched on by hand. His vest is a separate piece that can (probably) be worn by other tiny dudes.

Btw, you would not believe how hard it was to get a picture of this damn lizard without the cat getting in the way or the camera focusing on my sister’s foot or me getting shakey. That last photo looks like a scene from some “found footage” horror film or something. #EmpokNor
