I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.

Spock, after Vulcan was destroyed  (via femamerica13)

Long before the line above was uttered in Star Wars, Spock sensed something terrible happening a great distance away in a TOS episode.

(Spock suddenly jerks upright, his face a picture of horror.)
Kirk: Spock?
McCoy: What is it, Spock? Are you in pain?
Spock: Captain, the Intrepid. It just died. And the four hundred Vulcans aboard, all dead.

McCoy takes Spock to sick bay to see if he has a medical issue but finds nothing.

McCoy: But I thought you had to be in physical contact with a subject before…
Spock: Doctor, even I, a half-Vulcan, could hear the death scream of four hundred Vulcan minds crying out over the distance between us.

So Vulcans throughout the Federation should have sensed the destruction of their home planet in the 2009 movie.
