i can’t answer all these messages I came back to, but I think this covers most of it.
Q: Is tumblr really doomed?
Yes. Eventually.
But that’s okay, entropy always wins in the end.
Fandom is nomadic. (Or, to steal a phrase from @nightpool, an itinerant culture.) It finds a promising spot and sets up camp for a while, turns tents into edifices. Maybe even for long enough that it could seem like fandom spontaneously sprouted there, and that the platform IS the community.
But it’s not. Fandom isn’t tumblr any more than it was LiveJournal or LISTSERV or the underground networks of ‘zines. The community itself is our nation, and we’ll carry it with us when it is time to go.
Q: But I don’t want to lose my friends!
It is going to be so awkward when we give all our teary goodbyes, and then it turns out everyone is going in the same direction.
Q: Where are we going???
idk. nowhere just yet. And then one day, we’re all going to get to find out together! I’m excited!
Q: How are you backing up content on your journal?
Usually I, myself, use HTTrack, which is a tame webcrawler that wanders around on a leash, copying whatever it sees. It’s a really handy tool, but if you aren’t aren’t at least a *little* bit familiar with how websites are structured, it is probably not the way to go until you are.
Here’s instructions about backing up your whole tumblr to wordpress!
And if there are only a handful of posts that you really REALLY want to save - go to the post, hit Ctrl+S, and choose to save the “complete webpage”. It’s now on your computer.
(PLS NOTE: If there is a “full size” image that you need to click on to to view, it will not save with the rest of the webpage, because it is not actually on the webpage you are saving.)
If those options all seem overwhelming, don’t worry - I think people are at this very moment working on easier ways to archive stuff.
Q: Why so drama?
1. What part of “I will tell you a story” is confusing? Just because it is a story that happens to be true?
2. We have mourned the loss of Alexandria’s library for over a thousand years, and that information was a drop in an ocean compared to the creative output that got wiped out with GeoCities.
Was our work less important? Maybe. Or maybe it was MORE important. It marked the beginning of a transition into a new way of performing person-hood. We are too close; it is for posterity to judge.
I think its loss deserves at least a LITTLE fucking drama.
Q: If you have memories from the 90s, you must be SO OLD.
….adults? ………doing fandom?
Little sweet snippet I’ve found while browsing through my old ass DS9 collection. Still love the two 😊
#50: Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge (LucasArts, DOS, 1991)
The Secret of Monkey Island was self-aware, but it has nothing on its sequel. Early on, Monkey Island 2 explicitly places itself as being about what happens when the story is over but you still need to generate new stories. There is no grand new adventure. It technically has a treasure hunt to act as a goal, but it keeps that pointedly vague. Most of the game plays out as a shaggy dog story told in flashback by our hero Guybrush Threepwood as he dangles over a pit awaiting rescue.
