Pholisma sonorae, also known as sandfood, are a bizarre species of plant found mainly in the arid desert regions of Arizona, California, and Colorado. Because it lacks chlorophyll (meaning that it doesn’t have the ability to produce its own food), sandfood plants are actually parasites, attaching themselves to various desert shrubs in order to gain nutrients. Remarkably, the host plants do not seem to be harmed by this process. 

Sandfood are extremely rare due to increasing habitat loss.

[It really bugs me that Cardassians have grey skin, bleed black blood - but when they open their mouths to speak, the inside is human-like and red. My headcannon has always been that the inside of a Cardassian mouth is like that of the black mamba (minus the forked tongue, though!!).]

When I younger I watched a tv segment about this region in Mexico (I think you can get them in central and south america too) where you could buy these jewel covered beetles. They had little chains attached that you could clasp on and wear like a broach. Living jewelry pretty much. If you took good care of them they could live about 5 years. Now as a child desperately wanted one but once I got older I was definitely less comfortable with the idea it.

Anyways, I think they totally seem like a fancy gift Ferengi would give. At first I thought like a wedding or engagement gift but it would have to from a relative to the husband since the women wouldn’t have anything to wear it with. Or it could something really gaudy only old rich Ferengi like to wear. Like look how rich I am I buy beetles to wear, not eat.
