See, that’s what the app is perfect for.

Literally everything about Batman is so much better when you think about all the little behind the scenes things that must have happened to make Bruce such a goddamn dad

Like yeah he’s really bad with change and his communication abilities are really lacking due to being extremely heavily isolated and traumatized for the majority of his formative years, but like

I am at least 99% convinced that all the bat-named things like the batmobile, batcomputer, batfridge, etc., were originally normal phrases like ‘the car,’ ‘the computer,’ etc., but then Robin showed up he started calling them bat-things because he was nine, and Batman went along with it.

It’s too late to turn back now. Too late to make excuses to anyone. He’s committed. Nightwing doesn’t say anything. The other Robins have no idea. No one has any idea.

Everyone thinks Batman is legitimately obsessed with bats.

No, he just wanted his cave to be child-friendly, and when it turned out Robin #1 really liked the bat idea and thought it was cool enough that it should be incorporated into everything, Batman fucking incorporated it into everything. He just wanted to make the kid happy, damnit

His son is terrible at naming things.

S04E07 - “Starship Down”

dressedtothedsnines

Alas, there are no space bunnies in this episode. Nor are there a whole lot of interesting outfits.

Win, lose, or drawstring

Here’s Hanok, a Commerce Minister from Karemma. He has a pretty good glare. I don’t know if I’d take much sass from a race whose fashion aesthetic is “crooked Venetian blind”.

image

The crepe-y fabric is kinda nice. We’ve met these folks before so I don’t think I’ll go into his hair. Also it looks like maybe something already did.

Pretty swank looking data PADD there. Is that like the Trek equivalent of having a fancy fountain pen that you got for graduation?

Doctoring the books

The one thing I didn’t notice the last time we met a Karemman is the layering, with the shorter surgical-scrub-type sleeves on the Venetian blind shirt. Y'know, I’d prefer this to the red Federation scrubs any day.

Ensign Victory Rolls, reporting for duty

Ensign Carson pretty much has to hold up the hair game for the entire team this episode, because everyone else’s hair on this ship is BORING. Glad the Defiant is well stocked with bobby pins and Aqua-Net.

With a side of awesome

Side view, for your consideration. This is one of those styles that I can actually do in my hair but it lasts about fifteen minutes.

Da bomb

Okay I am NEVER gonna get over the hilarity that the Jem'Hadar torpedoes are GIANT BOMB POPS. image

These were my FAVORITE thing to get from the ice cream man! Looks like it’s still frosty cold, there, too.

Les jeux sont faits

I don’t know the rules of Dabo, but it looks sufficiently like a tarted-up roulette wheel that you can hang out in Quark’s and do Casablanca reenactments if you want. Or Grim Fandango reenactments, if you’re me.

I wanna pick up that center thing and shake it. Or do contact juggling with it. (I cannot do contact juggling.)

I would probably get thrown out of Quark’s on a regular basis, is what I’m saying.

Watch that man

I include this pic for two reasons. First, the woman next to Odo in Bajoran uniform colors I’ve not noticed before: cream shoulder pads over evergreen? Which division is that exactly? Forestry?

Second, the person behind them caught my eye with the shiny silver suit over a hot pink turtleneck. And then they caught my eye again…

Ziggy played Dabo

There in the back, between Stevens and Worf… LOOK LOOK AT THAT STARDUST SPACE SUIT OMG

I guess we can have contact juggling after all.

Take me out to the ball game

D'awww Benjamin has a Pike City Pioneers cap! (That’s the team Kasidy’s brother is on!) <3

image
Okay sir, if I must

Okay this is neat. Memory Alpha tells me that this cap is for the Homestead Grays, a team in the Negro Leagues from the 1910s to the 1940s. That’s just how much Kira means to him, that he’s letting her wear a historic piece of 20th century baseball memorabilia.

(The actual cap used in the show was sold on ebay in 2008.)

That’s all for this episode. Remember, starships were made to fly!

fourpennies

The Grays played in Pittsburgh and DC, so both the Pirates and the Nats do throwback games with their uniforms, and there are Grays’ players in the Ring of Honor in Nats stadium (only their last names, tho, or else I’d’ve died seeing “Cum Posey” emblazoned on the deck.) Anyway, the Nats sell the plain G hat without the piping in their team store, but I’d really like one like Kira’s. And this episode is perfectly timed, because Milwaukee is hosting their Negro Leagues Tribute Game on Saturday, the Grays vs. the Bears!

I don’t usually reblog myself, but: more info on the Grays! <3

The Confusing Evolution of Bat Echolocation

Here’s an article I wrote in response to a question I got here on tumblr, about why bats had such differently-shaped faces and whether or not echolocation had evolved more than once. I thought, ha! This should be an easy question with a relatively straightforward answer!

So today we will learn:

  • how very wrong I was
  • 4 gram bats who scream as loud as live rock concerts
  • bitter evolutionary biologists
  • how to trash Dollo’s law without even trying
  • bat faces can’t possibly get any weirder than this (they do)
  • why can’t you just settle on one method of yelling at the darkness, damnit
  • an entire family can live in this moth’s primitive ear (but just one ear)
  • what putting jelly on a bat’s nose does
  • how friendly men on buses can destroy entire scientific assumptions with a few words

and more!
