whenever i’m talking to someone and they tell me about something that happened to them i always tell them about something that happened to me that’s similar to what happened to them. i do it as kind of a “oh hey yeah this happened to me so i can relate to what you’re going through” but i’m always afraid it comes out as “oh yeah well this happened to me so clearly i have it tougher than you” or “i’m done talking about you let’s talk about me”

i swear i don’t mean it like that……..

I run into this a lot with my job - so instead of telling the whole story I say something like, “Oh my gosh, I had something REALLY similar happen. What did you do after that??” And I’ve found that works. Usually they explain and then ask, “So what happened to you?” And then you’re invited to share, and the formula for conversing continues on. :)

Thanks to both the OP for posting a thing that so many of us do, and the responder who gave us a better way to do it. You’re doing the lord’s work, my friend!

Hey guys, do you have any suggestions or do you, maybe, know where I could obtain a list of TOS novels that are heavy on the Kirk/Spock relationship? I've read Killing Time and the books written by Marshak and Culbreath but I'm not sure what else to read. It doesn't have to be the slashiest thing ever, friendship is OK, I just don't want to end up stumbling on something in which they ignore each other or something that focuses on either of them falling in love with some random character. Thank.

startrekreviews answered:

I’m sorry, but I don’t know any good lists myself, and I’m the only one doing reviews right now, but I’ll reblog this to my personal blog and hopefully someone (or any of the startrekreview followers) can help out!

In a very general sense, you’re best to stick to the books written in the middle of the TOS publishing era - the super old ones tend to be OC heavy, and the current ones tend to have mild friendship but be more even-keel than the wildcard, author-biased older ones; I generally find that the farther you go back, the more leeway the author had to go crazy with their own views. It might be a stereotype, but I definitely tend to find more Kirk/Spock feels in the books written by women.

Off the top of my head, Killing Time is probably the best for what you want; these won’t get gayer than that. Time for Yesterday and Yesterday’s Son are borderline Spirk with a child. Blackfire is amazing, but the Spirk is secondary to a Romulan/Spock. The Prometheus Design is terrible but does contain some Kirk/Spock elements. The Vulcan Academy Murders is quite good and has lots of Vulcanisms, but does include Bones. It’s the same for Crisis of Consciousness and Troublesome Minds. Everything by Diane Duane is excellent but again includes Bones. Weight of the Worlds has a good Kirk/Spock dynamic but has a much larger plot and cast. Ishmael hints plenty at Kirk/Spock, but they’re separated in it. Enterprise: the First Adventure is a great read and goes over Kirk and Spock first meeting and getting to know each other, though it’s a turbulent start.

That’s all I’ve got for now, but as I continue to review, character interactions and relationships are always something I look out for. ;)
