The Touch

ilcuoreardendo-fic

Garak hadn’t intended to lay hands on the young doctor when he’d approached him.

The touch was innocent to human and Bajoran eyes. Well, as innocent as any Cardassian touching a stranger could be perceived…. But to another Cardassian, it would have been aggressive, proprietary. The staking of a claim.

But there was only Garak. And the exhibitionist little thrill he took in the unacknowledged intimacy of the gesture.

Empok Nor ~ Garak

guljerry

I’m watching Empok Nor, and Garak is trying to goad O’Brien into playing Kotra with him. O’Brien say’s he’s not a solider anymore and the following convo happens.

Garak: “I see. So when you and Dr. Bashir go into the holosuites for hours at a time, you’re just repairing them?”

O’Brien: “What’s your point, Garak?”

Garak: I’m just curious. Why *do* you and Dr. Bashir spend hours in the holosuites dressed as fighter pilots reliving ancient battles?”

O’brien: “We… do it for fun. It’s a game.”

Garak: “And so is Kotra. And I’d love nothing more than to play against a man like you.”

This scene just makes me laugh my ass off.

Garak: Wtf are you always doing with Dr. Bashir in those holosuites. No, really, WHAT are you *doing* in there for *hours* with *my* doctor. I don’t like it and you should really let me kick your ass at this game now.

I mean Garak is also talking about the ‘soldier’ thing, but you all know Garak, he says a sentence and it has five different meanings on five different levels. You can’t tell me he’s not being jealous about Miles and Julian spending time together and being very passive-aggressive about it because he is.

I’ve recently been kicking around an idea for a post war Cardassia fic. It’s been done before (and done extremely well, so I’m kinda scared) but I though I’d try my hand at it.

Working title is Meet Me in the Ruins

Here’s an excerpt.

“You do not seem to me to be entirely Human, for you lack the superiority I have come to find in those who came to our aid in the beginning, only to leave as soon as their conscience was placated enough for them to do so. Neither do you seem to be here like those come for the thrill of adventure, only to be defeated by the stark realities of war that sent them scurrying home on the next shuttle off our diminished planet. Instead, you have made your home in a small hospital on the wayside, taking it upon yourself to learn our language and our ways. You share in our small joys, and you mourn at our losses. It is almost as if you consider them your own.”

It was not the most she had ever spoken to him, but it was the most she had ever said.

Julian had mulled over her words, weighing them as he had long ago learned to do when Cardassians spoke. He had simply answered, “I do.”

Rasha had studied him, her eyes darkened by the shadows of her ridges as she stared at him. She had nodded, the angle of her head saying that she believed him - as rare a gesture as he had seen since he arrived - before casting her eyes to the stars. As the light of the moons stretched her shadow out behind them she had said, “Then I think it is time you stop wearing that uniform.”
