Important Figures in Star Trek:
Majel Barrett-Roddenberry (born Majel Lee Hudec, credited as Majel Barrett professionally) has had more of a presence in Star Trek than any other actor. In the original Star Trek pilot, “The Cage,” Majel played “Number One,” a female first officer who—yes—wore pants. After NBC asked for changes (sadly including putting women in those minidresses and removing a woman from the first officer position) and Number One’s character unfortunately removed, she went on to play Nurse Christine Chapel. Chapel appeared as “Dr. Chapel” in Star Trek: The Motion Picture and very briefly is seen as “Commander Chapel” in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
In Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Barrett played Lwaxana Troi, mother of Counselor Deanna Troi, and Daughter of the Fifth House, Holder of the Sacred Chalice of Rixx, and Heir to the Holy Rings of Betazed.
Barrett’s voice is also the Starfleet computer voice, meaning that she was vocally present for all of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager, several episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and all of the TNG films.
Majel Barrett passed away in December of 2008. She was the wife of the late Gene Roddenberry, creator of Star Trek.
