From a preservation standpoint it could help textile and art conservators approximate the pigments used to color different objects since over time pigments break down. Chemically, each pigment has a slight variation so when they go to repair something faded or soiled they may be able to pinpoint the exact shade they need to restore. I like to think of it like a seed library but for colors.
