less fun things about writing star trek fic (if you’re me anyway):

- having to think critically about how the existence of replicators would affect the retail economy on non-federation planets
- deciding how standard food replicators are
- figuring out who has access to larger industrial replicators for items the in-home version can’t handle
- whether a locality would charge for use of government-owned industrial replicators
- really just figuring out the economy in general?
- like presumably cardassia has a monetary economy and thus doctors/tailors/government employees/gardeners would be paid for their time but most of the actual goods one would purchase can be replicated for free
- do cardassians have to pay electric bills???

There’s a book on this called Trekonomics by Manu Saadia. He also gave a pretty interesting interview about it in the podcast Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy.
