Ranunculus repens is in the family Ranunculuaceae. Commonly known as creeping buttercup, it is native to many regions of Europe, Asia, and Africa where it grows in prairies and areas with wet soil. The creeping buttercup gets its name due to the fact that it can spread vegetatively via stolons, which are modified stems from which new plantlets arise. This creeping habit, along with its bright yellow flowers, have made the creeping buttercup attractive for use in the garden. However, since it’s introduction into landscapes outside of its native range, it has been considered an invasive weed, colonizing pastures and grazing lands.
