So I’ve been reading through Chuubo’s Marvelous Wish-Granting Engine, and the single best thing so far has to be the author’s use of skill/obstacle examples.
Like really.
I also appreciate the compactness of the scale. Some games have task difficulty ratings soaring into three and even four digits; Chuubo’s manages to take a five-point scale all the way from “this will be somewhat tricky“ to “the mere proposition raises several troubling existential questions”.
Is it a log scale?
[programmer voice] that is a SIX POINT SCALE, go to fencepost purgatory
Technically it’s not - it said the five-point scale goes from “this will be somewhat tricky” (1) to “the mere proposition raises several troubling existential questions” (5). This is a beautiful piece of description that I cannot express my love for in words, but also accurate in that it only spans five points - 0 is effectively off the scale, as that represents no obstacle.
