Welcome to Day 3 of the ASM CUE

Dr Warhol’s Periodic Table of Microbes

The Small Guide to Small Things

Why this book? (It’s coming out soon!)

I developed and copyrighted the original poster-sized printed wall-mountable Dr Warhol’s Periodic Table of Microbes because:

1)      People needed a new and fresh way to learn about all manner of microbes in the world around them.

2)      Chemists and anatomists have had a monopoly on science posters for more than 150 years, and it’s high time for microbiologists to have their moment in the sun.

3)      My sanity is evaporating like a rain puddle on hot pavement.

Then I realized that the only people who would actually totally understand everything in the Periodic Table of Microbes were scientists who already knew at least something about microbes. And even they wouldn’t “get it” because the greatest scientists are really experts in only one or two aspects of a particular microbe, and don’t care about much else. The real goal of the Periodic Table of Microbes is to reach non-scientists and wannabe scientists and students and teachers and just plain folk who are interested in cool things. This, naturally, made me realize that I needed a guidebook to explain the most interesting things about small things you can’t see.

It also made me realize that I needed not one, but two, guidebooks. The book you are looking at right now is The Small Guide to Small Things. It is short and sweet, and intended for electronic book devices. It has no pictures, other than the Periodic Table of Microbes itself and the microbial symbols on each page. But it has great words. It has odd words too, like “arabinogalactanolyticum” and “chemolithoautotrophic hyperthermophile”. Don’t let the odd words get in the way.

The large version of the guidebook will be titled The Large Guide to Small Things, and will be full of images that show how the microbial world and our human world are absolutely inextricably connected. This, however, will take a bit of time, so enjoy the Small Guide now and look for the Large Guide at some future date.
