In the first year, the sight in the mirror of a nearly completed Quark would inspire me to become the character. In the second season, I would begin to take great fascination in the changing morning light as it played out on a cement wall, the way the color would change as the sun came up. I couldn’t help feeling I was trapped in Plato’s cave with its meaningful shadows. What I learned when I wore special makeup was that there was a fine line that needed to be walked. Michael Westmore had given me this wonderfully ‘alien’ face that immediately signaled the viewer that I was otherwordly.
