Tonight’s re-watched DS9 episodes were “The Passenger” and “The Nagus”.  We decided to skip “Move Along Home”.

In “The Passenger”, we learn once again that Starfleet has the worst computer security.  “This one file is protected, but nobody would think to protect a bulk erase command to all the working files” guys that is not how file permissions work at all, you need to fire and replace whoever is in charge of IT at DS9.  And Bashir at the start of the episode is channeling enough smug to power a starship.  Decent episode, even if the mystery of what’s going on was completely telegraphed and obvious.

“The Nagus”.  I may be in the minority of Trek fans, but I actually enjoyed most of the Ferengi episodes of DS9.  Grand Nagus Zek is grating, but he spends most of this episode pretending to be dead, so that’s a plus.  Armin Shimerman really does a magnificent job as Quark, and I’m enjoying the fact that the Ferengi, originally intended to be a major adversary in TNG, reduced to a joke when the fandom refused to take them seriously, are actually fleshed out and made interesting over the course of DS9.  The Ferengi culture has a lot of terrible aspects, and I watch these knowing that the original design of the race may have been influenced by racist Jewish ethnic stereotypes, but I still can find them to be some of the more entertaining DS9 episodes.
