Whalefish (Cetomimus sp.)

This week the midwater researchers conducting an expedition on the R/V Western Flyer were surprised to find and very carefully sample this bright red whalefish at 1,479 meters using ROV Doc Ricketts.

The animal was 10.7 cm long. These are the first living images of a Cetomimus sp. whalefish ever made.

Whalefish have developed an exceptional, highly sensitive lateral line system. This system of sensory pores that run the length of the body help it to accurately perceive its surroundings by detecting vibrations. Their eyes are very small and, in some species, useless!
