Dr. Lewis Zimmerman, noted 24th century scientist and holo-engineer designed the Emergency Medical Hologram, or EMH. He also designed a holographic iguana named Leonard. If you know anything about scientific types, you know they rarely name things at random. If you know anything about writers, you know they rarely make references on accident. 

I sort of like the idea that Leonard McCoy inspired Dr. Zimmerman in some way, because it would mean a tiny part of that grouchy Southern doctor was with the crew of Voyager in the Delta quadrant more than a 100 years after his original hijinks with Captain Kirk and the rest of the gang.
