The level progression of Fran Bow masterfully makes use of its world-changing mechanic by constantly altering what the player could expect to in the real world versus the alternative. By mixing elements between each, and slowly building and releasing tension, it’s able to provide horror that obscures a puzzle’s solution but never actually hides it, all with a very thematic sensibility.
