One thing I’ve been thinking about since I rewatched the pilot was how angry Kira was. I think Kira finally has the energy to be angry and she’s overflowing with it. There’s a huge difference in her behaviour in the pilot vs what we see in Shakaar. Sure, they’re fighting Bajorans and not Cardassians, but the edge isn’t there. They’re tired, out in the hills, doing rote activities to stay ahead of their pursuers. There’s no time for fury.
This is exacerbated by the contrast between Kira in ‘modern times’ and when she goes back in time for Wrongs Darker Than Death or Night. The other Bajorans have a dry, almost mechanical anger. They’re too exhausted to hate the Cardassians with the kind of burning passion Kira has in that first season. It’s more of a knowledge than an emotion.
It’s sad to see how angry Kira is in the beginning knowing how much more peace she gets later, but I’m also glad she’s able to reach that incandescent rage.
