One of the things I discovered probably later than I should have is that mostly people nominate themselves/their own projects for awards.

That’s how you get in the running at all.

I assumed it was altruistic actors nominating folk for things (and was always a little hurt I wss was never nominated). But that’s…… not how it works, at least not for most professional awards. Judges might ultimately select the nominees and the winners, but YOU are the one who puts your name out there. (Or maybe, say, your publisher, but ABSOLUTELY someone with a direct involvement and interest in a project).

I think a lot of us, especially women probably, are conditioned to think that tooting your own horn is bad, but that’s how you get noticed.

Like everything else in the world, the first step to winning an award is to ask the right people if maybe you could win an award.
