Plant of the Day
Saturday 29 June 2019
These glorious yellow flowers belong to Paeonia 'Bartzella' (peony) an intersectional hybrid between a tree peony and an herbaceous peony resulting in a plant about 80cm high with a woody base. This hybrid was created in 1948, after thousands of failed attempts, by Japanese horticulturist, Dr. Toichi Itoh. The plants thrive in a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil, with space from woody plants that will compete for soil moisture and nutrients. This plant was blooming in a private garden in Kentville, Nova Scotia, Canada.
