the comb jellies of the deep sea look like rainbow jelly beans, but it’s not luminescence that gives them that Pride Month flair!

that rainbow flicker is actually caused by light reflecting off their cilia, which are tiny transparent hairlike structures so tiny that they scatter incoming light like a prism!

the comb jelly strokes these cilia like banks of oars, scooting through the water like a really motivated ocean roomba.
