Softening up acrylic yarn
I’ve yet to try these methods myself, but hair conditioner and fabric softener are often used for this purpose.
You could wash your finished project using these methods, or you could wash the skein first and then work with it. To do this without your yarn becoming a tangled mess, put your skein into an old pantyhose first and tie it so the hose fits tightly around the skein. Put your pantyhose-covered skein in a laundry bag for extra security. Then wash it on your machine’s delicate setting or by hand.
