The makeup department learned most of what it needed to know about Odo from the character’s description, which said ‘Odo was a creature, a shape-shifter, who could change into anything he wanted to, but could not realise a human face of his own. He could not do the fine details of his own face.’ So the department began by taking a cast of Rene Auberjonois’s face and then started off by building his makeup with small pieces. But, inside of the first few episodes, they realised that it just wouldn’t work. Odo was too complicated a makeup to buld up with individual parts because the actor’s skin texture wasn’t at all like the smooth texture that the character description called for. So the department built a single full mask for Odo and that became the basic look of Odo for the rest of the episodes.
