cosmictuesdays asked:

I, personally, would like to know your Cardassian genitalia headcanon.

benicebefunny answered:

Um, well… *intense blushing*

I don’t have a set Cardassian genitalia headcanon; I use different ones across different fics and am welcome to the vast diversity of Cardassian junk the fandom has to offer.

Buuuuut, I did come up with a fairly involved headcanon for that longfic I wrote where all the protesters are telling the State to go fuck itself in the cloaca. That headcanon is a modified cloaca that plays on the fandom trope of the Cardassian penis being internal and there being—for lack of a better word—a sheath down there where Julian can put his dingle dangle during sexy times.

Fic: The Summer Sun in Winter [1/7]

feltelures

Title: The Summer Sun in Winter
Fandom: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Genre: Fluff/AU
Rating & Warnings: PG (references to alcohol, sex)
Words: This part 2686, ?? overall
Disclaimer: I don’t own Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Summary: Julian has spent the last six months working as a doctor at a hospital in Andor. Now he’s home for the holidays, to the joy of all of his friends—but especially Garak. This chapter: adventures with airports.
Author’s Notes: So this accidentally turned into the equivalent of a Nano project for me. And, like a Nano project, this isn’t nearly as polished as I’d really like it to be. However, Christmas doesn’t wait for perfectionists. Alas.

This is pure, unadulterated slice-of-life fluff from start to finish, by the way. Anybody looking for action or angst or complexity should probably look elsewhere. Anyone who wants to feel warm and cosy, though, make yourself at home!

I borrowed a little bit more from tinsnip and Lady Yate-xel's discussions than usual, so I suppose you could say this AU is ever-so-slightly AU—at least where my version of it is concerned, anyway.

On a serious note, this fic is dedicated to anyone for whom Christmas is not a time of good cheer. I wrote this as a way of showing what I think Christmas should be, not necessarily what it is. If you’re going to have a difficult holiday season, then I hope reading about Julian and Elim having a good one will be able to give you something of an escape, even for a little while.

That’s all. I hope everyone enjoys as I post this over the next few weeks. ♥

Crossposted to AO3 and my fic journal. My list of fics pending posting has also been updated.

I have a theory about The Neverending Sacrifice…

Okay, Cardassian memory works in layers right?  (like fricking everything else about them, sheesh)  And it was what, seven generations where according to Julian, the same thing happens every time?  What if the repetitive epic isn’t actually about the repetition?  What it the real story can only be seen if you overlay the seven repetitions together?  Then the places where the story is exactly the same each time stand out as highlights, but so do the little moments where something unique happens, and everything else is grey and a single hidden narrative emerges.

Argh, what am I even talking about?  I have no idea if that makes sense.

aelinor asked:

Writers sometimes say that characters can somehow take on a life of their own, and they can even surprise the author. I was wondering if this has ever happened to you? Thank you!

shearrob answered:

Oh, it happens quite a lot. The thing is, you start sometimes with an image in your head, or a theme you want to explore. And to tell the story you know you have to populate it with characters. And that’s all fine and good before you actually write the story, because whilst they’re simply *concepts* to enable that theme to work, the characters will do anything you ask of them. But as soon as you put them down on paper you start to change the parameters of what they would say and do, and the very best of them refuse point blank to simply help a plot contrivance. My answer is, once you start believing in the character, always trust them. Wherever they take the story will be more honest and sincere than your initial plot idea might have been - let them challenge it, and out of that comes your drama. (Sorry, bit of a pompous writerly reply, that!)
