Yep, it’s true, they do~

But I’m never sure how I feel about the books retconning things that the (TV show)…

Oh, really? Sarina? I haven’t even gotten to that episode yet and that squicks me.
You know, it was mostly Ezri, because from what I’ve heard, she is just lovely, and she and Julian are actually a pretty good match, and they’re 100% together when the show ends. So for my fic to feel honest, I needed to know what happened between them. Everything else I could handwave, but for some reason, I really felt I had to sort that one out properly.
I’m wary of that book series - I’ve heard so many very bad things…

Beneath the Stars: i am a dork

Oh! Sorry, you talk so much about DS9 I didn't realise you hadn't seen it all! I'll be careful to avoid spoilers from now on!

Ezri IS lovely though, I absolutely adore her, and the way they get together never sat wrong with me (then again, I have to confess I don't really ship anyone who isn't canon in DS9, so even though I understand WHY people ship Garak/Bashir and can see it, I never went 'NO NO HE'S NOT MEANT TO BE WITH HER') - but by the same token, their breaking up in the books didn't feel wrong either? IDK.

As for the books, I actually LOVE the early ones (the dozen or so between 2000-2005). They have, in my opinion, some really, really good stuff. The characters they bring in are just as interesting as the ones from the show, and the writing was all really excellent. There were very few duds, I think maybe there was only one or two that something felt a bit off for me. Mostly I was just keen to not have to leave the DS9 'verse. My Dad already had a lot of the books when I finished watching DS9 for the first time as a teenager, so I was keen to keep going, and they didn't disappoint!

But the latest ones are probably where you've heard all the bad things from! There are some decisions that the author makes, in particular with Kira that just send me into something of a blind rage, cause they feel completely out of character. It's not all bad of course, the latest duology especially had something of a reunion of DS9 characters, so there were some good bits. But some of the characters have been taken places I consider wildly out of character.

And yeah, of course, I can pick and choose what I consider to be 'canon' but the thing is that I've maintained my love of Trek by reading most of the books. I follow post-Nemesis Next Gen, the relaunch of Voyager, DS9 and Enterprise, the Titan series, Destiny and the Typhon Pact books, that's not even including anthologies and the Mirror Universe series', I've read dozens, maybe hundreds of Star Trek books. So for my favourite series to have their story ruined so thoroughly is rather distressing... :/

LOL at “you talk so much about DS9” - I DO DON’T I

Don’t worry at all about spoiling me; I’m thoroughly spoiled, I know what happens, I just haven’t seen it happen yet. I’m very slowly working my way through the episodes. Odo just totally turned into a pod person and linked with the female changeling and I’m a bit put out, so I haven’t watched any in a bit. Back to it soon!

I don’t know about “meant to be with” for G/B (not to say that is what you were saying, but it does turn up). I just really like the chemistry, and use it as a springboard for headcanons and post-canon-Cardassia-love-ins. I may feel just the same about Ezri when I get to her. TBH, the description of how they get together is soooo adorbs. I look forward to watching it happen.

I’ve read a few DS9 books, and they were all kind of so-so - this was baaack in the day, so it was all “Station Rage” and the one with the other shapeshifter, and I’ve complained before about how they really kind of sucked - you could tell the authors were phoning it in a bit. I’ve heard that the later books, around the era you cite, are much better, so I’ll probably dig into them some day. I still need to read A Stitch in Time, and to read that I need to finish the show, soooo…

I did buy one of the books just because I read there was a scene where Odo comes back and sees Kira. Yep, he did. It was really underwhelming. There are some things that fanfic just. does. better.

You know, I’ve read a lot of Star Trek books too - in my case, TOS and TNG, because when I was eight, that’s what there was. I remember thinking “Metamorphosis” must be the best book ever (again, I was eight), and loving the Diane Duane and John M. Ford TOS books (have you ever read How Much For Just the Planet? you must). I still legit love some of those TOS books. What’s your favourite Trek novel, if I make you choose?

Let’s talk about DS9~~~

Okay, this was a strange one. I was actually putting off watching this episode, because when I saw it about 10 years ago, the Odo/Kira feels were devastating, and I didn’t want to deal with it again.

And this time around, older Odo deeply weirds me out and makes me…

aceofwands

I think you really summed up what was so interesting about Odo’s character. That conflict between the person he thinks he is - based on the people he’s gotten to know ‘growing up’ on DS9 - and his inherent Changeling/Founder nature. And, not that I realised this while watching it, but now that I think about it, this moment really sets up a lot of Season 6 in terms of his story arc. We really see him struggle with his whole identity.

And after having seen that struggle and getting to know the Founders more (in seasons 6 and 7), this moment really makes sense to me, because I feel like, without Kira’s influence, and the other friends he’s made on DS9, he COULD become that person. I wonder if that’s what the writers intended all along, because if so I completely missed it before!

Hmmm, how fascinating!

tinsnip

Ah, that is fascinating! I bet you’re on to something there. There is a part of Odo’s mental makeup that does trend back towards rigidity, to knowing what’s best for people because they can’t be trusted to make their own decisions, to watching out for people even when the people don’t want him to. That does sound very Founder!

It’s always been sort of teased at. Odo watching Quark on secret channels, Odo saying screw the reports, Odo getting yanked as sole head of security because he doesn’t respect the chain of command - he knows what’s best, and why are people always distracting him with their ideas of what’s right? “Rules change, but justice is justice.” If they would just let Odo make the rules, then the rules would never change again.

Brrrrrrrrr!

(so much fun to have people to talk about DS9 with - thanks!)
