Maybe we can just say it was his idea - like, Miles and he were talking at Quark’s, and Miles was a little drunk and melancholy about the whole thing, and Julian was all tipsily, “Well, look, if the problem is just that you need a different uterus, I’m sure we can find someone to help out - look, there’s Kira, why don’t you ask her?”
“Julian, she heard you–”
“Ask me what? Hi, Miles.”
“Hi, Nerys. Ignore him; he’s drunk.”
“No, look, I’m serious - Kira, look, Miles is your friend, right?”
“Julian, please don’t do this…”
“Yeah…?”
“And Keiko is your friend too, right?”
“Julian, where are you going with this?”
“They want to have another baby–”
“Julian–”
“–only they can’t because Keiko can’t carry to term anymore because of Molly–”
“Julian, this is personal information!”
“–so they need someone else to carry the baby for them!”
“Oh. Like che'horem?”
“… like what?”
“It’s a Bajoran tradition. If you can’t get pregnant, your sister will have one for you.”
A dual chorus of “… really?”
“Yeah. Not practiced much anymore, but it’s a nice idea. Huh… Tell me more about how this would work…”
Two beers and three rounds of springwine later, it’s all agreed; Kira approaches Keiko, who at first just wants to kill Julian - a sensation not wholly unfamiliar to her - but is, later, grateful, and invites him over for an incredibly awkward dinner on the day Kira is fertilized. ^^
“How was it, my dear?”
“Oh, God, Garak, it was awful, I had to sit there and talk about Miles’s sperm–”
“Tsk, tsk. You’re going to be a physician soon. You’d better get used to this. Oh! Perhaps they’ll ask you to help with the delivery!”
“… can you imagine? Oh, my God!”
