Julian Bashir wasn’t undamaged by his genetic enhancements- he was just far better at hiding it. The Lethean’s attack is the catalyst for the old darkness to resurface and Julian decides to play a dangerous game with one Elim Garak. Julian’s ambitions are far more than he can handle but will he realize it before it’s too late? Garak/Bashir with side bits of Bashir/Leeta and others. Alternate Reality diverging from 3x18.

This is a) really weird, b) really disturbing, c) really REALLY GOOD. I’ve always wondered what Julian might be like if he realized what he could be, if he wasn’t quite so moral… Apparently so has he.

There’s some dubcon in this story. Here’s the thing that apparently makes it palatable: both Garak and Bashir are playing each other. Each of them is tricking the other into doing the thing that they both desperately want to consent to. It’s a fascinating dynamic.

That’s delightful. And Garak would know that, of course he would, but you can know something and not really know it… and so Bashir can hear the whispered conversation across the room, can pick up the slippery sibilances, can hear the choked “j” sound of his name on a tongue that can’t quite handle it…

Oh, yes, he hears a lot of things. So far he’s overheard three attempts at assassination. Two of them concerned Garak. He’s told him about one of them. The other… well, not yet.

Probably around the time Bashir sells Garak out to his ambitious underling, who’s been aching for a shot at a bigger job. The only reason it doesn’t work out for Garak is that Tain quietly has the underling killed. Favouritism, maybe. But also, it’s useful for Tain to have an operative who is slavishly loyal. Clearly said ambitious underling would not have been quite as loyal as Tain might have liked.

Meanwhile, Garak is staring at Bashir over his comm console, eyes wide. 

“You told Het I’d be there!”

“I did.”

“You told him I’d be lightly armed!”

“Yes.”

“How did you know?”

“I pay attention.”

Oh, dear, Garak realizes, he does. He really, really does. He’s one to watch, this Julian Bashir, because Garak is no longer sure who, exactly, is playing who…

Why, benefit for our plain and simple Garak, of course. The Human needs help; Garak will provide it. Garak can be his confidante, his guide to Cardassia. Garak can empathize with his harsh treatment, oh, so very unfair, at the hands of his Federation masters. Garak can pump all the useful information out of him, and then bring him to Tain to be sacrificed on the altar of Garak’s ambition.

Elim Garak, before exile, is not a nice person. (And, debatably, after exile he isn’t much nicer.)

What if Bashir is only working for Section 31 not because he necessarily thinks it's right, but because of a combination of general pragmatism and given that it's totally within S31's rights to exploit the Augments under Federation law, he wants out of the Institute and is the only one of the group stable enough to do so? He "got volunteered", as it were, and has finally gotten enough resources - or fed up enough - to make a clean break away from S31 for his freedom?

That sounds interesting. Anyone else want to chime in on this?
