both of you stop that right the fuck now
So somehow last night, I got to talking with Renae about Ferengi and their headgear, and how Quark never wears the head curtain the others do. We thought it might be something to do with status, since Quark owns the place, and all his workers wear it. Then, Nog grows up, is a man, and wears one once he becomes Starfleet. So we thought it was his way of showing himself an adult, but an Ensign. But there were still some holes.
We thought the best course of action was ‘Ask Armin’. Because he is the man to go to, right? Loves Star Trek and is THE Ferengi.
So after fucking around for an extreme amount of time in some dusty bins we made our way over to him. He has a booth in the vendor’s room where he has photos to sign and such and all these prices listed for doing pretty much anything. I asked him if questions were free. Luckily, they were~
So we asked him about Ferengi Head Curtains and why he was never sporting one and said he could even make up an answer, but he said, “No, no, I won’t do that, there is one.”
It is mostly a makeup thing and that they thought the clothes in TNG would cover the backs of their heads, so those curtains were legit just stapled on. Then, when he moved to DS9, they made him a new thing, and it had to fit over his own super big ears so they figured they’d just make him a head anyway. Anyone with a head curtain does not have a whole Ferengi head sculpted on!
"I also have a bigger head than any of the other Ferengi," he said.
We offered our status theory as an in-universe solution when he said there wasn’t an official one, but he said, “Ah, but the Nagus wears one.” And we were all just stumped. Though he seemed to like the idea that Quark thought he was important enough not wear one. Still, how great is it that he knew that the Nagus wears one? <3
So I decided to do my autograph right there, and he loved this painting and looked at the others, including the one that’s going to Andy tomorrow. He called his wife over to look at this, and said, “Can I sign this to you? Can I put that I was the model on it?”
"You can write whatever you want on it."
We even looked at all the shots of his wardrobe and tried to find the outfits I combined to make this one. He was really charming and genuine and great, and man, his smile is fascinating. Lovely man.
So here is my painting, and Armin claiming himself as the model.
