Yes, yes, agreed, she is disgusting and slimy and hypocritical and all of those things. I happen to be a person of faith myself - I quite like that description - and although my denomination is about as “anything goes” as it gets, I share your pain at how we sometimes get painted by the actions of the few, the loud, the morons.
But - there are tantalizing hints sometimes that Winn herself isn’t quite as bad as she seems to be! I remember her anger at Kira, her statement that the resistance fighters are all alike, that no one remembers that everyone had to fight in their own way. I’m sure Winn went through hell during the Occupation. Now she clings to faith both as a shield and as a weapon. She does what she thinks is right, and Prophets damn anyone who disagrees with her or gets in her way.
She’s awful and horrible, and the way the other characters warp around her event horizon is fascinating to watch. I certainly wouldn’t select her as my favourite character, but I just might watch a Kai Winn marathon for the sheer delight of howling disdain at the screen.
I guess it comes down to different ways of enjoying the same medium! Some people can watch comedies where the main character is humiliated over and over; I can’t. But I can definitely watch Winn Adami chew everybody else up and spit ‘em out!
Also - one of the things I love about DS9 and its fandom is how many different ways there are to enjoy the show, and that nobody is ever wrong. Best show! Best fandom!
