I have all these feelings about Kira and education. She’s on DS9 surrounded by all these academically gifted ~Starfleet types, but she’s had so few opportunities for school. And she’s been working for years with very limited technology—she may know her way around a Cardassian assault rifle, but has she ever had one of those PADDs? I imagine being on DS9 is a massive shock to her: the rules and bureaucracy of Starfleet ALONE must be so different from working with a rebel group. And she’s surrounded by all these people who talk about xenolinguistics for fun, and it must seem just so ridiculous to her. Not that Bajorans don’t value science and education and so on, because it seems certain that they do, but that kind of thing is just so far removed from anything Kira has experienced in her life thus far. It must be really, really hard to adjust to this sudden new set of expectations.
And, for some reason, in my headcanon, Kira’s dyslexic, or the Bajoran equivalent thereof. The thing is, her education has been so limited that she probably doesn’t realise she’s dyslexic, and she’s suddenly supposed to read all these screens and remember sequences and write reports and it’s so difficult. But she maybe just thinks it’s difficult because she’s had such limited education in comparison with the Starfleet types, and she’s determind to never show weakness. So she’s staring at these stupid PADDs that it takes hours to read and wishing someone would just give her a damn assault rifle, because they must be toying with her up here on DS9, setting her up to fail, because these stupid reports have no right to be this hard. Not after everything she’s been through.
just gonna go on a quick rant about Kira Nerys. I’ve seen a lot of posts about her being “overshadowed” by sisko and the bajoran provisional government and always being “second in command” but seriously. SERIOUSLY? her character is especially unique because they combine a truly strong, brave, and smart woman along with someone who is feminine and can embrace her sexuality (with bariel, odo, etc). not only that, throughout the show they show men touching her without her consent, and she responded with either beating the shit out of them or pretty much telling them to fuck off. when it comes to big decisions, if she doesn’t agree to them, she doesn’t go along with them like some starfleet graduate, she fights until there are some concessions. she may be reactionary but throughout the show she grows to be such an incredible part of the station and an invaluable member of the fighting force against the dominion (even in the cardassian liberation movement when she’s wearing a starfleet outfit waaaat!!!). so I’d appreciate y’all to give some love to Nerys and what her, along with the other ds9 ladies (dax, kassidy, ishka, etc) did for the franchise. peaceeee
Loving Nerys was an exercise in self-discipline. In holding back, when she so desperately wanted to cling, to protect. Set during the early season two three-parter which begins with the episode The Homecoming. Nerys is busy saving lives. Jadzia is surprised by how desperately she wants to protect her very capable partner.

These are excellent, excellent portrayals of a wounded, healing Kira Nerys. This is as she should have been, had the show taken a more realistic approach to the effects the occupation would have had on the Bajorans. Highly recommended.
You guys, this is a killer good fic, especially if you’re a Kira fan. Very, very well written. Characterization is A+. Fascinating might-have-been scenarios involving Kira, and she’s clearly recognizable as herself in each one, and yet… changed.
Cannot recommend highly enough.
