Yes, The Battle of the Five Armies is the best of the Hobbit movies by far. But it’s still a far cry from the glory of Jackson’s Rings cycle, which benefited from a much more defined quest. And yes, it’s a fine, fitting conclusion. But it’s still the third part in a series that could have been tidily wrapped up in two, as hinted at by the novel’s subtitle: There. And Back Again.
