PRElings (Permanent Residents of Earth) may resent Starfleet because government officials can have first pick of a person’s personal labour. Well, I mean not first pick, but they are able to take something in the name of the academy. This system can (and lately, does) result in shortages of cheese, wine, chocolate, designer clothing, seats to anticipated plays or concerts, or even special treatment for certain housing districts. PRElings see this as space-dwelling humans taking the best parts of their planet and throwing the rest in the trash after they’re bored of it. The older generation may even remember how quick some were to leave Earth behind after First Contact while parts of the planet were still radio active or on fire. Earth is a beautiful place in the late 24th century, but it’s all due to century of cleanup after two devastating nuclear wars.
