Martok is the best Klingon because he gets that being a Klingon isn’t just about being a Klingon, it’s about telling the STORY of being a Klingon, and letting other Klingons be part of the awesome story you’re telling
He loves his wife, but what he loves most is the story of him being in love with his crazy-ass hateful wife. He loves battle but what he really loves is the story of the battle.
He couldn’t pull himself out of his depression after he was in prison because that’d be a shit story, him almost murdering worf and then winning a battle is the way the story is supposed to go. He doesn’t kill Gowron because him just killing Gowron is a shitty story, making repeated sacrifices of great heroism and then Worf jumps in and kills Gowron on his behalf is a way better story than that.
